On the evening of February 20, the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics has closing successfully at the National Stadium, also known as the Bird's Nest.
That night, the topic became a hot topic on the Internet. Directed by director Zhang Yimou, the three-time Oscar-nominated director, the laser light show of the willow tree beautifully expressed the simplest and most sincere emotions through "a song, a group of people, a handful of willow branches, an array of lasers, and a piece of green shade, together towards the future". This moment has added luster to the "light" of Beijing, the world's first dual Olympic city.
The closing ceremony of the Winter Olympics is not only a cultural and artistic feast, but also a high-tech performance. Behind the scenes of the most discussed part of "Farewell to the Willows", the true triple laser projection technology was used, independently developed by CASIRIS technical and engineering team. They were so glad and proud to be part of such an incredible event.
How long did it take from being selected as a participating company in the Winter Olympics to performing at the closing ceremony? What preparations have we made?
- From Winter in 2019 to Spring in 2021, the design-assembly-environmental simulation test has gone through two seasons. Everyone on the team has spent the new year’s vacation time preparing the machine, debugging, and rehearsal overnight. Everyone races against time to prepare in advance to make everything perfect, as Director Zhang Yimou did. Finally, the laser light show has perfectly done and raised lots of attention and discussions at the closing ceremony.
What difficulties did we encounter during the closing ceremony? How did we solve it?
-There must be difficulties. The laser product itself has a wide range of applications and good stability for temperature and humidity. We had successful cases in high-latitude and high-altitude areas, but in order to ensure the safety of the Winter Olympics, we put forward almost strict requirements for product design.
In Hangzhou city, a place where there is no ice and snow all year round, we can only try our best to use the ice storage in the park to create experimental conditions and conduct environmental simulation tests. During this period, it is necessary to go outdoors to record the experimental values. Under the huge temperature difference, many people on the team got a cold and fever. Fortunately, we pass through the ice storage test for more than a month to eliminate all hidden dangers and ensure the safety of the show in the Winter Olympics.
As our products are placed in the basement of the Bird’s Nest stage, the daily lineup adjustments were in the basement. The team spent the night there but we felt everything was deserved when the "Technology Winter Olympics" has perfectly demonstrated.
The reason why CASIRIS was selected as the participating company of the closing ceremony?
-In fact, there are more than a dozen companies selected, but after several rounds of product demonstration, the director Zhang Yimou finally decided CASIRIS participate in the important part of "Farewell to the willow". It owes to the CASIRIS cutting-edge projection products that can well convey the design ideas of the chief director. The true lasers have good directionality that will not diverge. It can really pass through the snowflake torch stand and reach the top, forming towering light tree beams.
The 2022 Winter Olympics is over, but we'll never forget the wonderful scenes left behind by the laser light show of CASIRIS projection along with the hard work of the CASIRIS team. That’s just like the theme of this Winter Olympics, "together to the future".
